"Science on Quesnel Lake"

Location:  Quesnel Lake, BC

In this episode, Mike joins Fish and Wildlife's Section Head, Mike Ramsay, to explore the Horsefly Rainbow Trout Research on Quesnel Lake. Known for its depth and clarity, Quesnel Lake is the deepest freshwater fjord in the world, making it an ideal location for studying these magnificent trout. The Horsefly strain of rainbow trout, native to the Horsefly River and Quesnel Lake, is notable for its large size and aggressive behavior, thriving in competition with other species like char and kokanee salmon. During their research, Mike and the team delve into the seasonal movements of these trout, which follow sockeye salmon into rivers to feed on their eggs and fry. The lake's unique ecosystem supports a diverse range of fish, including bull trout and kokanee salmon, contributing to the rich biodiversity of the area.

"Browns Bay Derby"

The BCOSF crew heads to the stunning Browns Bay Resort for their annual charity chum derby, an event everyone looks forward to each year. Although chum fishing was closed down by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) just days before the derby, the event organizers quickly adapted and switched the focus to hatchery Coho. While the Coho were elusive, the energy was high, and the fishing spirit stayed strong! Participants enjoyed a fantastic weekend filled with fun, camaraderie, and fishing—proceeds from the derby were donated to the Greenways Land Trust, supporting environmental conservation efforts.
